PLANET Game Concept The player has landed a ship on, well, a PLANET of unknown language with a culture in ruins. The player must survive long enough to get off the planet and/or solve the mystery of why it is in ruins. The planets the player lands on all have a common catastrophe that has committed to their demise. BASIC IDEAS: * Procedurally generate the alien planet. * Generate simple "dungeons" underground. * Generate various resources for the player to find. * Generate new monsters for each separate 'verse. * Alien artifacts tell a story, but nothing's translated until clues are found. * Keep the "planet" 80 tiles wide to keep it simple at first. * Persistent seeds (e.g. planet EE32 is the same every time)? * Visual aesthetic: simplicity over all. * Simple silhouettes and bright backgrounds. Dark but different "solids" * Use as few words as possible * Use color carefully. * Pursue challenge/fantasy aesthetics of play * Keep the pace of play slow & tense. * Make sure monsters/traps/hazards are actually dangerous, and deadly. * Punish players who rush. * See if I can scare/startle players. * Death permanent * Keep total playtime for a single run-through at 30 minutes or fewer. * Allow limited player tools. * No crafting. Only finding. * 1 climbable rope per game. Reusable but you can leave it behind accidentally. * 1 gun. Limited bullets. * Players can lose resources or leave them behind. * Small backpack. Maybe a set 3-4 items? * Meta-game goals * Keep a high-score table * Special tokens/skulls that persist across games * Keep a log of things discovered about the planets and their demise. * Generate new monsters by combining the old? * Layers from previous games insert into the new?
